Jewel
1)
To start out, let’s create an ellipse with the Ellipse Tool
in the center of our canvas.
With your newly drawn ellipse selected, take a look at the Properties Inspector and change the Fill Category from solid to Radial.
Now click on the color swatch next to the Fill Category to edit the Fill Gradient. Set your colors so that your gradient looks like the one I have to left. The only rules that you need to follow is that one of the colors has to be black(#000000) and the other color has to be a deep, rich color like Red, Orange, Green, Blue, etc. Lighter, pastel colors will not work well with this tutorial as you will not be able to see the highlight and the jewel effect will be lost.
Lastly, choose the Pointer Tool, make sure that your ellipse is selected and adjust your gradient so that it looks like my example below. Basically, you want black to be in the upper left and your other color choice to be in the lower right of the ellipse.
2)
Make sure that your ellipse is selected and look at the Properties Inspector. Click the + icon in the Effects: section.
Choose Shadow and Glow | Inner Shadow and set your options exactly like the options in my screen shot below.
Press Enter when you are done and your image will look like my example below.
3)
Make sure that your ellipse is still selected.
Apply the exact same Live Effect again (Shadow and Glow | Inner Shadow) but this time set your options exactly like the options in my screen shot below.
Press Enter when you are done and your image will look like my example below.
4)
Make sure that your ellipse is still selected.
Apply the exact same Live Effect for a third time (Shadow and Glow | Inner Shadow) but this time set your options exactly like the options in my screen shot below.
Press Enter when you are done and your image will look like my example below.
5)
This step requires that you have KPT 6.0 installed for best results. You can buy KPT 6 here. You could use Photo Shop’s Lens Flare instead but it will look much different and you will have fewer options.
With your ellipse still selected, go to the Properties Inspector and click on the + icon in the Effects: section. Choose KPT 6 | KPT Lens Flare… and mess around with the settings to make a cool looking highlight.
Before you press the Apply icon, be sure to uncheck the Render Flare in Transparency option from the Preview menu. If you fail to do this, your lens flare will apply itself outside of your ellipse and it will look very odd.
Click Apply when you are done and your image will look like my example below.
6)
Finally, lets add a drop shadow to give the illusion of depth.
Make sure that your ellipse is selected and look at the Properties Inspector. Click the + icon in the Effects: section.
Choose Shadow and Glow | Drop Shadow and set your options exactly like the options in my screen shot below.
Final
Press Enter when you are done and your image will look like my example below.
And there you have it. A cool looking Jewel created entirely in Vector so it is scalable to any resolution without image degradation. Also, you will notice that this tutorial takes place on only 1(one) layer!!! ahhhh the beauty of Macromedia Fireworks.
